Hungarian
competition in Bacau
There will be a Hungarian competition in Bacau on Saturday
24th, February. Joint organisers for the event are the Association
of the Hungarian Csangoes in Moldova and the Educational inspectorate
of the County Bacau. The childern can compete in 4 categories: Lower
Grade Beginners (classes I-IV), Lower Grade Advanced, Upper Grade
beginners (classes V-VIII), Upper Grade Advanced. Two children can
enter in every category from villages with Hungarian education. The
best pupils will participate from 16 villages. The 2 best from the
Upper Grade Advanced participants can continue to the country competition.
The topics will be compiled by Hungarian teachers in Csikszereda,
and dr. Vilmos Tanczos university professor from Kolozsvar (Cluj)
will be overseeing the competition.
Since the Association of the Hungarian Csangoes in Moldova could not
compete to organize this event, and there is no subsidy from the educational
inspectorate, we would like to ask everybody to contribute to cover
the travel costs and meals.
Thank you very much for your support.

Road
Signs In Hungarian
We cannot see a Hungarian road sign
in any of the Csango villages in Moldova. The reason behind is that
according to the current legislation, at least 20% of the population
have to declare themeselves belonging to a minority at the time of
the census. None of the villages have met this criteria during the
2002 census.
The real problem is that there are actullay no signs, not even in
Romanian, so it is very difficult to find any of the places.
This is the situation of Magyarfalu, the Hungarian village situated
furthest in the East, 65km East of Bacau. In order to find the way
there, one has to stop and aks people several times, despite having
a map, as there are actually no road signs.
A group of local people have placed a sign in 2 languages, that one
has to turn right at a junction. The sad experience was that after
2 days somebody has removed the sign.
Magyarfalu will be part of Europe, when it can be found by Europe.
At present, one has to have a significant local knwoledge to find
that Hungarian speaking village.

Citizens'
Ball in Mosomagyarovar with participants from Kulsorekecsin
As a reprasentative of the organizing
committee, I would like to thank the Association of the Hungarian
Csangoes in Moldova to facilitate the participation of Hungarians
from Kulsorekecsin. Their presence has contributed significantly to
the success of the ball. The participants have represented the colorful
traditions of the Csangoes in a very engaging way, therefore inspired
intrest in many people in Mosomagyarovar and its surroundings. I hope
that they had also a very pleasant time, and got many new friends
and acquintances..
Some of us could spend all the four days with the Csangoes. Their
presence brought joy into the everyday life in Hungary. All the 10
participants will be fondly remember, and hopefully will be kept in
touch with in the future. Mosonmagyarovar hopes to see them again.
Finally I would like to thank Csilla Szasz for organizing the participation
of our guests. She has also coordinated the show of the folk dance
group, gaining many new friends for the Csango culture.
Our guest have given a very favourable light for the the Godfather/Godmother
program, and I am pretty certain that there will be new participants
from Mosonmagyarovar.

Dr. Peter Peto

The
MCSMSZ appears in front of The Board Against Discrimination
The Association of Csango-Hungarians
(MCSMSZ) appeared in front of the Board
against Discrimination (TBAD) in reference of the petition that
was submitted in June 2006. The parties (the representatives of MCSMSZ
and the representatives of the Teaching Board of the County of Bako)
were to appear in Bucharest on 06 Feb 2007. At the hearing only the
representatives of the MCSMSZ appeared in person, the other party
only opined in writing.
In the opinion of MCSMSZ, discimination did occur in the Summer of
2006 against the teachers who thought Hungarian language in the County
of Bako. Reason: the Teaching Board did not advise the teachers of
the necessary hours. In addition, several places these teachers got
in a disadvantegous situation from the Romanian colleagues because
these teaching positions did not require certified teachers (according
to the Teaching Board) so these Hungarian teachers could only work
as substitute teachers.
While the problem with the number of teaching hours did resolve through
a executive order of the Teaching Board (after the visit of Gabriella
Pasztor on 14 Sept. 2006), the issue with the classification of the
certified teaching requirement did not, even after several discussion
between MCSMSZ and the Board.
MCSMSZ petitioned the TBAD with supporting arguments to accept that
desrcimination has occured and to ensure that this not happen again
next year.
TBAD will respond in writing about its decision to the two sides.

Ms.
Csilla Konczei, the SECU (secret police) and the Csangos
Ms. Csilla Konczei, University Professor
at the University of Kolozsvar, folklorist, antropologist, reports
her observations in her blog file. An important part of this blog
file concerns the Csango question. Through the published and written
documents we can learn a lot about the importance that the Secret
Police gave to the monitoring of the Csangos. The responses to the
blog shows that these questions are relevant even today (and not only
to us Hungarians).

Club in Frumósza
At the end of September 2006, the
Student Photo Club was organized, after securing 10-15 manulally operated
cameras. We started taking the pictures. The 16 member Club is using
these manually operated cameras to learn all he tricks of taking pictures.
Two students share one camera per week, and they are taking their
pictures according to a pre-arranged subject matter.
After that, a discussion is held, to review and critic the scanned
photos. That brings all the student together. They are looking at
each others pictures, they get annoyed if the pictures seems blurred,
or it is a good one of the neighbor's dog. Of course, they add, that
they should have taken a picture from their family.
We go for a outing afterwards, subject being ourselves, taking a picture
of each other as we photograph. I observe how the students are working.
They put away the mobil telephones as they are taking bad pictures,
then the kids get lost in the woods. Only sometimes I hear them calling:
"Teacher, Teacher" when they can't get the focus of the
camera right or the lightmeter gives them trouble.
Accept the photos from the Photoclub of Fromosa with kindness, the
same way the students are presenting them to you.

They
have distributed the support payments for Education-Upbringing in
CsangoLand too.
According to the so called status
law, every student who is learning the Hungarian language and lives
outside the borders of Hungary proper, is entitled support payments
from the Hungarian goverment. That was distributed by the School Foundation
of Kolozsvar. These payments arrived to the participating families
during the months of December and January for the last school year
via mail.
This year the need for support grew again in Csangoland: in 2005 1175
families obtained grants, in 2006 his number grew to 1463. Each family
received approximately 23,000 HUF in local currency.
Requests were denied for 22 families in 2005, in 2006 this number
was 45. This last number includes the families of kindergarten aged
children who are not eligible for this support according to the law.
The support this year, a sin the previous year, had a great impact
with regards for the schooling options for the parents.
We have to remember that due to the work of the Education Board of
the Alliance of Csango Hungarians, approximately 30 Million HUF support
had arrived to the 16 communities and many families who were in disadvantaged
financial situation with regards of schooling expenses..
Int he name of the children, we would like to thank the support of
the Hungarian taxpayers and the School Foundation , who made it possible
to receive these grants for those who live East of the Carpathian
Mountains.
